We understand the delicate balance between nature and the human element as ranchers of a family-owned and operated business in Ojai, California. We have raised our cattle on our ranches in California without using steroids, growth hormones or antibiotics for many years. Our cattle thrived naturally on our ranches.

As ranchers, our core values dictate that all animals should be raised humanely.

The true pasture-to-plate process by Watkins Cattle Co. is the slow way, but it’s the right way.

 

In recent studies, range fed beef has been shown to be a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3s are beneficial for individuals with heart disease and some studies have indicated that they may also be anti-carcinogenic. Grazing freely on native natural grasses on which our cattle graze provides them with Omega 3’s.

Due to an unanticipated surge in business, along with supply chain issues and the California drought, we have had to alter the way that we produce, harvest, acquire, and process the products we offer. There have been both small and large changes.

A small change that we have made is the inclusion of some products from third party suppliers. The demand for some products has forced us to import beef and pork from other farms. One example is Tri-Tip cuts. These are a popular cut with a high demand, so we have outsourced them rather than frequently being sold out.

We take the quality of meats you purchase from Watkins seriously. To ensure that we are providing only the highest-quality products, we source our meat from sources as close to us as possible. All the while, being transparent with you all in that some meat may not have come from our pastures on rare occasions. We have done our due diligence to make sure these suppliers follow our feeding program and guidelines for an all-natural product.

As a result of the purchase of a custom meat shop and the construction of our own USDA Inspected Harvest Facility in Northern Utah, we made significant changes. The lack of water and pasture resources in California made us decide to relocate our ranch and cattle operations there as well. In this way, we were able to control every step of the process, thus improving the quality of our products from pasture to plate.
